Adolescent females and hormonal contraception

V. BRIEU (Lambersart)

This year, the family planning will have their 40-years-old birthday. In 1967, the Neuwirth law authorized the contraceptives to be prescribed and sold in France. Nearly 7 years after, hormonal contraceptives became available free of charge for under age women (less than 21-years-old). These events considerably changed the women way of life, especially for the adolescents in preventing non desired pregnancies.
Contraceptive efficacy and tolerance have been considerably improved by research in the hormonal contraception field.
In Europe, the hormonal contraception is the method used by adolescents. Thus, it is interesting to know what are the attitudes, the needs and the preferences of the adolescents regarding their contraception. Are they satisfied with their contraception ? What is their perception of the benefits and the risks of the pill ? What do they expect from the future contraceptives ? To answer these questions, an oral contraceptive study (face to face interviews of 30-40 mn) was conducted with 295 female adolescents in France, United Kingdom and Germany. The results will be overall presented and the differences of behaviour will be analysed country by country.
