Practice in a Penitentiary Medico-Psychological Regional Service (SMPR)

S. BARON-LAFORET (Fresnes)
SUMMARY :
The author relates an experience in an SMPR while confronted with sex offenders. The problems reported are typical of psychiatric practice within a jailhouse environment, where offenders are not necessarily prepared for such interventions and yet may change beyond expectation if handled with a bit of know-how. The suggested approach combines three aspects: inducements (getting an inmate to undergo treatment), working out individual or group therapy, meeting with their families. Part of the assessment describes how difficult it is to make them more aware of violence
