Treating sexual offenders
B. CORDIER (Paris)
Summary: Before deciding on treatment, it is necessary to reflect on its legitimacy and ultimate goal. Polymorphic disorders call for various forms of care: continuous support from educational psychologists, individual or group therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy and drug treatment. Prescribing anti-androgenic drugs requires a good knowledge of their biological effects and a careful examination of their effectiveness and limits. At last, the Guigou Act (on mandatory care), in introducing the "injunction to undergo treatment" and the supervision of a medical doctor acting as coordinator, opens up new prospects albeit arguably in breach of the medical ethic.
