Summary:
There is few medical litterature concerning prevalence of sexual dysfunction in general population as well as in depressed patients.
This kind of troubles represents an important health issue, with a marked impact on the quality of life.
Sexual dysfunction is related to various factors in depressed patients. An important number of patients suffer of these troubles as they appear as secondary effects of antidepressant treatment, specially tricyclic antidepressant and SSRI.
Recent studies with SSRI show that there is a high prevalence of these troubles, and also accumulation evidence that sexual dysfunction is not well assessed by the clinician, since the patients do not complain about it spontaneously.
The sexual dysfunction represents a very important factor of the non-compliance to antidepressant treatment. Herer, it appears necessary to develop a therapeutic strategy that takes into account the quality of life.
