Interest of androgens in post-menopausal woman : myth or reality ?

B. ROSSIN-AMAR (Marseille)

SUMMARY :
The idea of using androgens in substitute hormonal therapy of post-menopausal women is indeed a very old notion.
The first study works are more than thirty years old.
R. Merger, J. Cohen have already demonstrated the efficiency of estradiol valerianate in combination with 200 mg of DHEA. It was the only combination containing DHEA available in France.
The exploding contraception market in parallel with the one of progesteron derivates obtained from more potent molecules with much less metabolic side effects, have caused the use of androgens and nortestosteron derivates to be reduced dramatically, particularly in France to few exceptional case, in contrast to the USA.
Unfortunately however, notions of dose reduction and administration mode were never properly investigated.
Enlightening new recent works have revealed androgens positive result on bone health and responsible for the sensations of energy and well-being on the humor and sexuality of post-menopausal women.
Mentality must change for we are aware that the syndrome of oestrogen deprivation does exist and is accompanied by hot flashes, nocturnal sweating, and vaginal dryness.
The syndrome of androgen deprivation syndrome, can not be ignored.
Androgens have shown their positive impact and bone, libido, psyche and the feeling of well being.
