Current approach to premature ejaculation (PE)

R. PORTO (Marseille)

SUMMARY :
The author evokes firstly the basic problems in premature ejaculation, insists on the relativity of its pathological aspects and on the paradox of the medical attitude, and describes the main therapies.
The success of the treatment depends on modifying and correcting mental and sensory processes of the patient during his sexual activity. When premature ejaculation is an isolated symptom without other psychological problem, it can be conceptualised as a sexual learning disability and has a good prognosis with sex therapy using behavioural methods.
In other cases, premature ejaculation is associated with deeper psychological problems and couple’s difficulties ; the treatment here consists in more complex psychodynamic approach, which do not exclude behavioural measures when it is time.
