Twenty three years follow-up study: sexual problems, treatment issues and legal concerns

S.M. DWYER ; D. FINSTAD (MINNEAPOLIS, U.S.A.)

SUMMARY :

A 23 years follow up study was completed on persons with sexual offending problems. This study included 380 persons, with data collected from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) of Minnesota. Although multiple questionnaires, and interviews as ways of collecting data were not used in this study, as they were in the 17 years study, never-the-less, this retrospective study appears to be thorough and sufficient for this time. Although the results are not what the authors had hoped for, the questions raised about treatment may lead to new research ideas and can result in thoughtful discussions regarding the appropriate use of treatment. Re-offending rates increased form 9 % (17 year study) to 12.9 % in this 23-year study. The next research need is for clinicians to gather understanding of whom really needs treatment and for whom is treatment effective.
