This is a trial to evaluate the incidence of honeymoon impotence cases in this centre. This is a kind of psychogenic erectile dysfunction (ED), which is not uncommon in conservative Middle Eastern societies. The patients presents by ED in their first few coital practices after marriage due to severe performance anxiety. The aim is to focus on the expected high incidence of a potentially preventable cause of ED.
2375 files of patients complaining of ED were reviewed. These patients were seen during a 5 year period from January 1996 – December 2000. Data included age, detailed history and clinical assessment. Of the 2375 ED patients, 418 complained of honeymoon impotence (17.6%). Patients’ mean age was 27.2 (range 20 – 43). This study has shown that honeymoon impotence is not uncommon in the Saudi society with an alarming incidence of 17.6% among ED patients. This should direct the attention towards the need for better sex education to save the newly married from such a disorder which has a great impact on the quality of life.
