Catheters, urinary appliances, leaks… How to cope with urine control during sexual relations in cases of motor handicap

B. SOULIER

SUMMARY :

Do you know that more than 4 million people in France are affected by incontinence ? Many of them are valid, but others have a hemiplegia, a spina-bifida, a traumatic spinal cord injury, a traumatic brain injury, a multiple sclerosis, a Parkinson syndrome, or a neuromuscular disease…
Not having any leaks during the sexual act, not being afraid of it, is essential.
Many practical ways exist to know how to make love when one of the partners has a urinary catheter, when intermittent catheterization is operated, when you need to press on the lower abdomen to urinate, when you have a drainage bag on the abdomen….
And even if medecines, surgery, following technical advices, care of the partner are not enough, we can still offer something.
To overcome this suffering that wounds the person deeply and that worsens the relationship in the couple, a psychological support is added to these advices.
“I’m a baby again”, “No one will want me like this”, “I’m so ashamed to have leaks that now, I can’t do anything in bed”…
Therapists can propose to their patients these few practical advices and give them hope and vitality during a short psychotherapy.
