Sexuality and proctology

B. Roche, K. Skala ; J. Robert-Yap

SUMMARY :

Sexuality and proctology are often intertwined together because of their close anatomic relationship in the perineum.
Five major proctological diseases are connected with sexuality:

- sexually transmitted diseases,
- anorectal injuries,
- foreign bodies,
- post obstetrical sphincter ruptures,
- colorectal sexual injuries.

Most of the time patients affected by these lesions remain silent or deny the problem. They are suffering emotionally and physically. Although treatment is possible in a majority of cases, it is difficult to begin due to the reluctance of the patient to speak about this hidden and private part of the body. The management of these lesions has to be multidisciplinary. A psychological approach is mandatory as the long-term effects of the lesions may be irreversible.
